What do they call this expensive Indonesian coffee? Kopi Luwak, “Kopi” means coffee and “luwak” is the local name of an animal that eats the raw red coffee beans. The animal, also known as civet, digest the small outer part of the coffee cherry is, but not the inner beans they are excreted. The digestion adds a unique flavor, and removes the bitter flavor. The beans are picked by the locals and sold for $600 a pound and $50 a cup.
