Information and Robotic Technology Research Institute, part of Tokyo University, was formed in order to help Japan’s problem of an aging population and a low birth rate. One of their projects was the IRT Assistant Robot. This project was backed by Toyota, Olympus, SEGA, Toppan, Fujitsu, Panasonic and Mitsubishi. The robot is 155cm tall and weighs 130kg. The robot contains five cameras, a laser range finder, ultrasonic sensors. These all help with the the detection of obstacles. It moves on 6 and it’s battery lasts from 30 minutes to about an hour. The robot is programmed to do everyday chores such as sweeping, picking up, and laundry. The robot is also convenient because it can open drawers and even hand things such as medication to an elderly person. It can turn appliances on and off, such as a washing machine. This robot is every housewife’s dream. The price of this item is about $10,000.
