You wouldn’t think that wearing a certain color would be a sign of wealth, but wearing tyrian purple was often a sign of wealth in the past.
Tyrian purple, also known as “Imperial Purple” is a color is made with a purple dye called murex. What makes this so expensive however is the source of the dye, the color is derived from the milking or crushing of a special sea snail. It takes more than 10,000 snails to dye one garment, thus making the color expensive and rare. Nowadays teh color is most often used to restore old works of art, but it can still cost you almost $4000 for about a gram.
